Introduction

The Department of Chemistry was started in 2003 with two faculty members, Dr. Mohsan Nawaz and Ayesha Tazeen and six students. Prof. Dr. Mohsan Nawaz is presently heading the Hazara University as Vice Chancellor. The Honorable VC also holds the Deanship of Faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences. In 2004, the M.Phil. program was started in, which was followed by the initiation of doctoral study in 2005-6. At present, there are 21 faculty members working under the leadership of Chairperson Professor Dr. Nadia Bashir. In 2010, the Chemistry Department was shifted to the first floor of the then constructed academic block. The department has six laboratories that include one general, three research and two general-cum-research labs. The scholars of Chemistry Department can also benefit from Central Research Laboratory (CRL) for analysis and research purposes. CRL also provides mandatory training and hands-on experience to undergraduate and graduate students on different techniques. The University has a fully operational campus management system that serves students and faculty alike. The department has four ongoing HEC sponsored research projects available with different faculty members. Two more faculty members received funding from the Higher Education Commission for newly submitted project proposals. Two faculty members were also granted postdoctoral fellowships for conduct of research in the United States. This makes the Department one of the leading in the University. The total number of students enrolled in different programs of the Chemistry Department during Fall 2024 has been 387. The total student enrollment in Bachelor of Studies Program in the Chemistry Department is 235. M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs have 128 and 24 scholars, respectively. Different need-based and merit scholarships are available for students’ facing hardship. The teaching-learning activity took place face-to-face during Spring 2023. The activities of the Department are run through a fully functional Campus Management System. The Chairperson of the Chemistry Department, Prof. Dr. Nadia Bashir implemented the guidelines in true spirit. The admissions, enrollments, issuance of transcript, student clearance etc. are managed through CMS. The Hazara University is ranked among the top Universities in the Province of KPK. According to Times Higher Education, the teaching quality, research environment and international outlook were significantly improved in the year 2024. Among World Young Universities, Hazara University was ranked between 251-300 in 2024 by THE.  Due to successful implementation of environmentally benign policies, Hazara University was way ahead of other HEIs in the Province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 15th countrywide and 463rd globally by UIGreen Metric World University Ranking 2024.

Vision

Hazara University intends to be a standard university providing affordable quality educational opportunities for students to develop scientific, socio-cultural, economic, and political leadership, through learner-centered teaching and research, while strengthening their identity at regional, national, and international level.

Mission

The Department of Chemistry is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge through innovative research, high-quality education, and community engagement. We strive to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical principles, critical thinking skills, and hands-on laboratory experience. Our mission is to foster a collaborative and inclusive learning environment that prepares graduates for careers in academia, industry, and beyond while addressing global challenges through scientific discovery."

Message from Head of Department

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Department of Chemistry. As Chairperson, it is my honor and privilege to extend to you our heartfelt greeting and to share with you the vision, values, and aspirations that guide us.

Chemistry is often called the “central science” — it bridges physics with biology, materials with medicine, and theory with application. In our department, we believe in nurturing not just students, but future leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers.

Our goals are manifold:

  • To provide rigorous, up-to-date instruction grounded in both theoretical understanding and hands-on laboratory work

  • To foster a spirit of inquiry, encouraging students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and explore new chemical frontiers

  • To support and guide research — from undergraduate projects to advanced graduate initiatives — that addresses local and global challenges

  • To build a community of collaboration among faculty, students, and external partners, enabling interdisciplinary work in areas such as environmental chemistry, materials science, medicinal chemistry, and sustainable technologies

  • To instill in every student the values of integrity, critical thinking, safety, and ethical conduct — because as chemists, our work often impacts society and the environment

We are constantly striving to enhance our curriculum, upgrade our facilities, and expand research opportunities. We aim to equip every graduate with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive — whether in academia, industry, public service, or entrepreneurship.

We also recognize that success is a collective effort. Our faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners, and students all play vital roles. To those who have supported our journey thus far, we express our deepest gratitude. To prospective students and collaborators, we eagerly welcome you to explore, participate, and grow with us.

Should you wish to learn more — about our programs, ongoing research, collaboration opportunities, or ways to get involved — please reach out. Together, we can push the boundaries of chemical knowledge for the benefit of society.

Thank you for your interest, your support, and your trust.

With warm regards,
prof. Dr. Nadia Bashir
