Welcome to the Department of Microbiology, Hazara University – a vibrant hub for education, research, and innovation in microbial sciences and allied health programs. Since its establishment, the department has grown into one of the largest and most dynamic academic units at the university, offering programs that prepare students for global careers in science, healthcare, and research.
Explore our flagship feilds:
🦠 Microbiology – Building foundations in microbial sciences and biotechnology.
🧪 Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) – Training the frontline diagnosticians of healthcare.
🩺 Physical Therapy – Preparing skilled rehabilitation professionals for modern healthcare challenges.
🧬 Forensic Sciences – Uncovering scientific evidence through advanced analytical and investigative techniques. 🔍
Established in 2002, the Department of Microbiology at Hazara University is a leading center for teaching and research. We began with the 4-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Microbiology (BSc Hons), providing a strong foundation in microbiology. Over time, we expanded our academic offerings to include postgraduate programs, namely the 2-year M.Phil. and the 4-year Ph.D., enabling deeper research in diverse fields of microbiology.
To meet the growing needs of the healthcare sector, the department also launched the BS Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program in 2019 and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in 2021, attracting students from across Pakistan.
Our faculty includes highly qualified academics, many with PhDs from prestigious institutions in the UK, Australia, China, and Malaysia. Their expertise covers all major areas of microbiology, ensuring that our students receive top-quality education and mentorship.
The department is equipped with seven modern laboratories – three dedicated to graduate research and four to undergraduate teaching – fully equipped for advanced microbiology research. Alongside academics, we encourage students to participate in extracurricular and social activities, and our students have consistently won awards at both university and national levels.
Graduates of our programs are employed in prestigious universities, colleges, pharmaceutical and food industries, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research organizations, both nationally and internationally. This success highlights our commitment to providing a well-rounded education that blends theory, practice, and innovation.
“To be a globally recognized center for excellence in microbial sciences education and research. We envision a future where our graduates become leading innovators in the field, driving advancements in healthcare, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of society.”
“The Department of Microbiology strives to be a leader in education and research, fostering a diverse and innovative learning environment that empowers students to become future leaders in the field. We achieve this by providing a state-of-the-art curriculum that equips students with the fundamental principles, practical skills, and theoretical knowledge of microbiology to tackle emerging challenges and contribute to advancements in human health and society.”
I am honored to lead the Department of Microbiology, a department with rich history and a promising future. My personal journey with the department began in 2001 as a student of the very first class, later as a faculty member, and now as the Chairman.
Over the past two decades, we have achieved remarkable milestones. Our highly qualified faculty, with international exposure and diverse expertise, delivers exceptional teaching and collaborative research across multiple areas of microbiology. Our graduates have secured successful careers across Pakistan and abroad, contributing in healthcare, industry, and academia.
The past six years have been particularly transformative. We have constructed seven state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, and launched two new flagship programs – the BS Medical Laboratory Technology (2019) and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (2021). Today, with over 900 enrolled students, we are among the largest departments of Hazara University.
Our commitment to progress remains unwavering. We are dedicated to introducing new disciplines, refining our curriculum, and fostering an environment of innovation and productivity. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that the department’s contributions to science, healthcare, and society continue to expand and flourish.
